Mycophenolic acid is an immunosuppressive agent produced by Penicillium species. It reversibly inhibits inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), blocking de novo guanine nucleotide synthesis in proliferating T and B lymphocytes. It prevents organ transplant rejection and treats autoimmune conditions. Its structure features a phthalane ring linked to a hexenoic acid chain.
